GETTING A LIBRARY CARD AND MAINTAINING YOUR ACCOUNT

    • You will need:

      • Photo Identification - Picture ID issued by government, school, or employer
      • Proof of Address - A document bearing the applicant's name and local address (it cannot be Photo ID)
      • A completed library card application. Applications can be picked up from the Circulation Help Desk in the library, or can be printed from our website.

Bring all three items to the Circulation Desk to be issued a card.

More detailed information can be found on our How to Get a Library Card page.

    • Children from 0 - 17 years of age may have their own library card, but it will be attached to the account of their parent or legal guardian.

    • You must be at least 18 years old to have your own library account. Children under the age of 18 may obtain their own library card, which must be attached to a parent/guardian with a library account. More detailed information can be found on our How to Get a Library Card page.

    • Yes! All Provo and Orem City residents are entitled to a Provo City Library Card. See our How to Get a Library Card page for more information.

    • Homeowners in Provo Canyon, including Spring Dell, Sundance, and on South Fork Road are not located within the Provo City limits, do not pay property taxes that support the library, and are not eligible for a free resident library card. You may purchase a non-resident card for $60 for six months or $120 for a year of library use.

    • You can get a library card if you don't live in Provo or Orem, but there is a fee associated with the card ($60 for six months or $120 for one year). Go to the How to Get a Library Card page for more information.

    • Library cards expire every two years for residents or one year for college students and educators. Internet Only cards, which allow use of our computers, also expire in one year. You can renew your card by going to the Circulation Help Desk or by calling 801-852-6660.

    • You can update your contact information in person or over the phone (801-852-6660). We will ask for your library card number or, in person, you may show a photo ID instead. You may view your current contact information by logging in to your Library's account online, however contact information cannot be changed online.

    • Your account can be deleted if it is inactive for a number of years.  We will also delete your account if  you or a legal guardian requests that we do so. If your card is no longer in our system, you will need to come into the library to get a new card.

If a card has been replaced, such as when a card is lost or missing, the old card will no longer work in our system. If you are unsure if the card you are using is your current card, you can call the library (801-852-6660) to get more information from us.

    • For your protection, never share your PIN.
      To change your PIN:

      1. On the online catalog, log in to your account by entering your Library card barcode and current PIN.
      2. Once you are logged in, click on “My Account," then click the “Personal Information” tab.
      3. Click on “Change PIN” in the menu shown in the “Personal Information” tab.
      4. Enter your current and new 4-digit PINs (numbers only), and click the “Update” button.

If you have forgotten your PIN, or to change it in person, please go to the Library’s Circulation Help Desk and show a picture ID issued by a government entity, school, or your employer. Call 801-852-6660 during Library hours for more information.

    • Report lost or stolen library cards to one of the service desks (Circulation, Reference, or Children's) or call 801-852-6660.

      • Fines and fees may be paid at the Circulation Help Desk or 1st Floor Reference Desk with cash, check, credit, or debit cards.
      • Fines and fees may also be paid at the Self Check units with either credit or debit cards.
      • Online payments are accepted through PayPal.
        • Login to your account on our online catalog.
        • Click on "My Account," then click on the "Fines" tab, and then select PayPal.
        • You may pay with your PayPal account or a credit or debit card.
      • Library privileges, including borrowing materials, are suspended when your fines exceed $10.00.
      • If your account has a balance of more than $25.00, it may be sent to a collection agency, after notification efforts (always make sure we have your contact information).
      • You may make partial payment of fines.
      • If you pay for lost materials, please keep your receipt.  If the lost materials are found and returned to the library within 90 days, you will receive a refund.
      • Bring damaged materials to the Circulation Help Desk.  If an item is damaged beyond normal wear and tear, a fee may be assessed, or you may need to pay the full replacement cost of the item.

Unfortunately we cannot accept replacement items for something that was damaged. The replacement fee also covers the staff time of locating, ordering, and processing the book for our collection.

    • To sign up to receive holds, overdue, and renewal notices by text, ask at the Circulation Help Desk or call 801-852-6660.

More detailed information can be found on our Text Notifications page.

FINDING A BOOK OR AUDIO/VISUAL ITEM

Questions about how to use these services? Call 801-852-6661, come in to the library, or click on the “Ask a Librarian” tab on the right side of the screen if you need assistance with your device, your account, or anything else!

    • Yes, our Used Book Store is located across from the Circulation Help Desk. We also hold periodic book sales in our Ballroom. More information about the Used Book Store and the book sales can be found on our Used Books page.

    • We have several services available to help you find a good book to read!

Our Booklists suggest books and are grouped by genre, reading level, time period, award winners, etc.

Our Book Review blogs feature reviews of books our librarians are reading. Teen and Adult book reviews will tell you if it’s a staff pick, an audio pick, or a clean read.

Try our Personalized Reading Recommendation service; tell us a few things about the books you like to read and one of our librarians will tailor a recommendation list just for you!

    • The Library catalog does not retain a record of any items checked out before September 2016. To see a list of what you’ve checked out since September 2016:

      • Login to your account with your library card number and PIN.
      • Once you’re signed into your account, click on the Personal Information tab.

If you are looking for a book you checked out before September 2016, the most valuable resource is the collective knowledge of all the Provo City Librarians. Feel free to visit one of our Reference Desks and we will try to figure out what book you are trying to find.

We also provide free access to NoveList Plus with a Provo City Library card.  This is a premium online resource that allows you to describe aspects of a book and review a list of possible candidates.

To contact a librarian either call 801-852-6661 or click on the “Ask a Librarian” tab located on the right side of the screen.

CHECKING OUT, RENEWING ITEMS, RETURNING ITEMS, AND HOLDS

Detailed information can be found on our Holds and Renewals page.

      • Option One: For items that show at least one copy "Available" you can call the Reference Desk at 801-852-6661 or click on the “Ask a Librarian” tab located on the right side of the screen to have the item pulled from the shelf and held for you. The item will be placed on the hold shelves the same day and will be held for 4 days.
      • Option Two: If you don't need it right away, you can just click on the "Place Hold" hold button. The item will be located and pulled from the shelf within 48 hours. You will then be notified once the item is ready for pickup. These holds are placed on the hold shelves and will be held for 4 days.
      • *If you do not yet have a library card, books can be held at the Reference Desk until the end of the day.
    • If you have placed a hold on an item and it is ready for you to pick up, you will receive notification by email, a recorded phone message, or text message.

Notification preferences are selected when you set up your library account, but can be changed at any time by calling the Circulation Help Desk at 801-852-6650, option 1.

    • Your item will be held for 4 days. You will be notified by phone, email, or text message when the item is ready for you to pick up.

If you decide to schedule a curbside pick-up time, please do so before the end of the 4 day expiration period.

    • After you receive notification by phone, email, or text message, you have 4 days to pick up the item(s) from the self-service holds shelves located around the corner from the Circulation Help Desk.

Items are organized into sections by the first four letters of your last name.

Some popular items are kept behind the Circulation Help Desk. If you can't find your item, be sure to ask for help.

    • Outside: Drop boxes are located in the north outdoor parking lot and the north side of the underground parking garage. There are a few items which should not be returned in these drop boxes:

    • Unfortunately, no. While Provo residents can get a library card and check out books at the Orem Public Library (and vice versa) our libraries are independent of each other.

Because of this, Orem Public Library books cannot be properly checked in at the Provo City Library. Any Orem Public Library materials returned to us are put aside at Circulation.
